Filesharing between Vista and Mac OS X

The other day I had to access files over the LAN on OS X 10.4.3 and retrieve them to my Vista. No matter it's year 2009, this process is never a trivial task.

This post was more a reminder to my self then a real tutorial. For more in depth explanation check out this tutorial and this one for sharing more than public folder on OS X. Also keep in mind that I had to access files on OS X Tiger, Leopard has slightly different menu options.

If you wish to access Mac share from Vista

Log into a Mac OS X system:

    1. Open System Preferences and go to the Sharing pane. Click on the "Services" and check the box next to "Windows Sharing".
    2. Click on the "Accounts..." button and check the box(es) next to the Mac OS X user account(s) you would like to enable access for from the network
    3. Take note of your Mac's IP address, which will be displayed at the bottom of the Sharing pane in System Preferences (eg. Windows users can access your computer at \\192.168.1.2\seven)

    On Vista computer:

    1. Click Windows key + R (or select Start / Run) and type in 'regedit'
    2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
    3. In the right pane, click on the "LmCompatibilityLevel" and in the Value data change the value from 3 to 1
    4. Exit regedit and you should now be able to properly authenticate to your Mac OS X (or other Samba) shares in the network. If you don't wish to edit registry manually, you can simply download and execute this reg file who does this for you.
    5. To access Mac share, navigate (from Explorer or Run command) to ip address and share name on Mac from Mac Step 3 (eg: \\192.168.1.2\seven). When prompted, enter Mac username and password you enabled to access those shares and that's it.

If you wish to access Vista share from Mac

    On Vista system:

    1. Go to Control Panel / Network and Sharing Center and setup File sharing or/and Public folder sharing. Select users who will have access to those shares over the network and select access level
    2. Open up command prompt (click on Run, enter cmd and press Enter) and enter: ipconfig (and press Enter). Look for a IPv4 Address from one of connected adapters (Wireless LAN in my case) eg. 192.168.1.3.

    On Mac OS X system:

    1. Open up Go menu of Finder toolbar and select Connect to Server (Apple key + K)
    2. Under Server Address enter IP address and share name from Vista system in following format: smb://ip_address/share_name/ (eg: smb://192.168.1.3/public/ for normal share or smb://192.168.1.3/c$ for admin share)

    Next big thing from Google

Google is cooking something crazy in their labs - a new chat/email/teamwork/artificial intelligence mashup service called Google Wave. This is a step to live video teleconferencing with automatic translation to your language. Only thing we need after that is a warp drive. :) Wave will be released by the end of the year. Šaban, thanks for the info.:)

Twitter – complete ignorance for IE6

Oh wow. I haven't seen this one before.

For some reason, we have been tinkering with Twitter lately ( www.twitter.com/digitelhr | www.twitter.com/crosig etc..)

Just for the kicks, we tested how Twitter works in IE6, and tried to register there. It is impossible. By impossible, i do not mean "very hard" or "brain hurting" i mean - impossible. The Captcha does not load, and any links regarding Captcha are not operational. I know that this directly is not Twitter's fault, rather Captcha providing service ( reCAPTCHA ), however, someone at Twitter must have seen this and concluded - WHATEVER, no IE 6 support for you dear clients!

    jQuery [@attr] selector updates

Yes, it is that time of year when you decided it's time to update project wide your favorite javascript framework - jQuery. Many versions have passed since your 1.2.3 version and you became pretty much outdated. You download it, put it where it belongs, cross your fingers, moment of silence.... bam - nothing works any more.

If you had similar experience while upgrading from jQuery 1.2.x to 1.3.2, don't fear. It's most likely due to the fact that in jQuery 1.3 [@attr] style selectors were removed (they were previously deprecated in jQuery 1.2 but we just didn't care). Just do massive search for "[@" in your files, and simply remove the '@' symbol from your selectors in order to make them work again.

Internet Explorer saves Office 2007 files as .zip downloaded from Apache web server

This falls into category - If It Weren’t So Sad It Would Be Funny. Well the other day, I was making dynamic pricelist generator for elkotech.hr webshop. User logs in, generates Excel (.xlsx) pricelist with his own discounts and stuff and downloads it. Except for slow Excel 2007 worksheet creation with php code, everything is pretty straight forward.

After I deployed the stuff on production server, clients calls me up and says - "Hey, what kind of zip file did you create? It's full of strange xml files!". Doh! What zip? Scratch...Scratch... What browser do you use? Aha.. Internet Explorer. :)

The thing is - since Apache doesn't come out of the box with mime handlers for "new" Office 2007 formats (.docx, .xslx ...), he sends that .xlsx file as Content-Type: text/plain. Internet Explorer (6,7,8) tries to be smart and figures out that .xlsx is nothing more than zip file containing lots of xml files, and therfor offers user to save that document as .zip file. Rendering my beautiful pricelist useless in the process.

The workaround is simple - just add this to your .htaccess file (or appropriate Apache config file to which you have access)
    AddType application/vnd.openxmlformats .docx .pptx .xlsx
After that, files with those extensions will be served with correct content type - Content-Type: application/vnd.openxmlformats.

Alternatively, you could deliver the files on your own trough php's fpassthru and add appropriate heders by your self, but fpassthru is slow as hell.

  • Web::strategija 05

We created banner campaign for 5th annual Web Strategy conference (Web strategija) held here in Zagreb by our friends. The theme of 5th conference is - recession in web industry! So, if you see our evil eagle logo on their site, don't be afraid of the eagle. :) We didn't have enough time to prepare our self to be speakers on this conference, but my good friend Goran Blagus will share some of his infinite wisdom with visitors. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area. Read more...

    The new Star Trek

So let me get this straight.

    This guy

Due to accident warps into past (not so distant past, few hundred years)

And in the time he comes from, the future, his planet was destroyed

Knowing his planet is destroyed he is pissed off, and wants revenge

But good people tell him "You are in the past now, your planet is not destroyed yet"

Of course, he does not want to hear that crap, and goes on about his revenge.

Excuse me? Is it just me, or this plot is so bad it just begs for tomatoes followed by guillotine? I mean, c'mon, he could just go to his planet, and warn them about incoming danger. They only got few hundred years to prepare! While he is at his planet, he could also meet his grandmother. She is/was hot when she is/was young! *Wink* *Wink* I am my own grandfather scheme!

    Read slowly now:
Future Spock, who is really close friend with future Scotty, telling present Scotty something that future Scotty discovered. Do i hear universe imploding on itself? Is that a sound of epic fail coming from the nearby black hole?

Who authorized this scenario? Kindergarten children?

Proudly running on Word Press, and above all, proudly using Comic Sans.
